About Seattle

The City of Seattle is a West Coast seaport city and the seat of King County. The city is situated between the saltwater Puget Sound (an arm of the Pacific Ocean) to the west and Lake Washington to the east. The city's chief harbor, Elliott Bay, is part of Puget Sound, which makes the city an oceanic port. The city lies on several hills, including Capitol Hill, First Hill, West Seattle, Beacon Hill, Magnolia, Denny Hill, and Queen Anne. The Kitsap and the Olympic peninsulas along with the Olympic mountains lie to the west of Puget Sound, while the Cascade Range and Lake Sammamish lie to the east of Lake Washington.

Recreation: Seattle’s mild, temperate marine climate allows year-round outdoor recreation, including walking, cycling, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, rock climbing, motor boating, sailing, team sports, and swimming. Popular walking areas of Seattle include Green Lake, where people walk through the forests and along the bluffs and beaches of the 535-acre Discovery Park (the largest park in the city) in Magnolia, the shores of Myrtle Edwards Park on the Downtown waterfront, through the shoreline of Lake Washington at Seward Park, in Alki Beach in West Seattle, or along the Burke-Gilman Trail. Seattle is also home to five major art museums and galleries: Consolidated Works, the Frye Art Museum, the Henry Art Gallery, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Seattle Asian Art Museum.

Schools: Education is a primary focus for many Seattleites due to the high concentration of technology, engineering, and other jobs that require advanced degrees. The United States Census Bureau surveys indicate that Seattle has one of the highest rates of college graduates among major U.S. cities.
